DU marks historic Flag Hoisting Day


The Dhaka University authorities on Saturday observed the Flag Hoisting Day commemorating the hoisting of the first national flag of independent Bangladesh.
DU VC Professor Dr ASM Maksud Kamal inaugurated the day's programme by hoisting the national flag as the chief guest on the historic Battala premises adjacent to Arts Building of the university in the morning.
ASM Maksud Kamal said the national flag of Bangladesh was hoisted first in independent Bangladesh following the visionary thoughts and guidance of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the greatest Bengali leader of all time.
Terming the hoisting of the national flag one of the most significant events in the historical course of the country's liberation war, he said, Bangabandhu had already decided when, where and how this flag would be hoisted.
The vice-chancellor also said, "Bangabandhu was a visionary leader and this great leader led us towards freedom step by step through movement and struggle."
He added, "The history of the establishment of the nation should be known and communicated to the younger generation."
He pointed out that if these histories are known correctly, the young generation will never be misled by the anti-liberation forces.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Muhammad Samad highlighting the background of the flag hoisting said the significance of the flag hoisting day is immense to spread the history of the great liberation war and independence among the young generation.
Young people should know about the life of the greatest Bengali father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, historical language movement, the glorious history of the country and the nation, including the great liberation war, traditions, achievements and significance of various days.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr Sitesh Chandra Bachar highlighting the significance of the Flag Hoisting Day said the existence of Bangladesh was announced to the world by hoisting the flag on March 2.
Following the discussion, prominent freedom fighter and renowned singer Rafiqul Alam rendered song.
Besides, students of Dhaka University Music Department performed national songs.
Dhaka University Teachers Association President Prof Dr Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan, General Secretary Prof Dr Zeenat Huda and coordinator of the programme and Dean of the Faculty of Arts Prof Dr Abdul Bashir were present.
The programme was conducted by Registrar Prabir Kumar Sarkar.
Besides, deans, syndicate members, teachers, students, officials and employees of the university were also present.
