DU suspends three BCL men over sexual harassment

The Dhaka University (DU) has temporarily expelled three students affiliated with Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) for their alleged involvement in sexually harassing a female student, reports bdnews24.com.

The expelled students are-- Ratul Hasan Nayeem, student of Applied Mathematics Department, Amirul Islam, student of Zoology Department's and Nazmul Sakib, student of Statistics Department.

 All of them are first-year students and attached to Amar Ekushey Hall. They are activists of the ruling Awami League student wing.

The patrol team of the university's proctorial body caught the three on Tuesday midnight when they were harassing the girl at the TSC premises.

 They were turned over to Shahbagh police later that night.

 The DU's acting Proctor Amzad Ali on Thursday said the authorities also issued show cause notice on the girl and her friend Rakib Iqbal, first-year student of Population Science Department, who was with her at the time.

They are to explain their presence at the TSC late into the night without permission from authorities.

 A two-member committee would look into the matter and there was the possibility of stern actions being taken based on their findings, he added.

The three were sent to court on Thursday, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh thana Abu Bakar Siddique said.

 "No case has been filed over the incident yet. They were sent to court under Section 54 (of the Code of Criminal Procedure)," he added.
