DU teachers for release of colleagues

A segment of teachers of Dhaka University observed a silent-standing programme on the campus Thursday demanding unconditional release of their four detained colleagues and eight students immediately.
Some 40 teachers out of the total 1,513 of DU joined the 30-minute protest programme at the footstep of Aparajeyo Bangla at 11:30 am carrying various placards hanging from their neck to get the four captive teachers and eight students of the university freed.
On the other hand, DU Teachers Association (DUTA), in response to a letter of several aggrieved teachers, has convened a general meeting at 6 pm today (Friday) where the next course of their movement seeking release of the jailed teachers may be announced.
Prof Anisuzzaman, Prof Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, Akhteruzzaman, MM Akash, Geeti Ara Nasrin and Md Samad, among other influential teachers of DU, attended the silent-standing programme.
Talking to reporters, Anisuzzaman said that they took their silent stand there demanding only release of the detained teachers and students.
"Though the country is going on under emergency powers rules (EPR), we are compelled to stand here with incitement of our conscience to make our colleagues free as they (jailed teachers) didn't commit any crime by expressing solidarity with the agitation of students last August," he added.
