DUCSU polls likely in March: DU VC

FE Report | September 17, 2018 00:00:00

The much-awaited election to Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) is likely to be held in next March.

DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Akhtaruzzaman said this at a meeting of Paribesh Parishad after sitting with leaders of all active students' organisations of the university on the campus on Sunday.

"Our provost committee, proctorial body and syndicate have set a deadline - March 2019 considering the areas of work of the polls," he said.

"The DU administration is holding this primary programme before the polls. We need to hold more meetings to arrange it. As part of the election preparation, the update of voter lists is going on in full swing," the VC said.

The draft of the voter list would be prepared in October 2018, he said, adding that completing the voter list is a gigantic task and it would be prepared as per the DUCSU constitution.

The president and general secretary of the central committee of the BCL, president and secretary of the DU unit BCL, the president and general secretary of the central committee and DU unit of the JCD, and president and secretary of the central committee and DU unit of Bangladesh Chhatra Union (BCU), Bangladesh Chhatra Federation and different left-leaning organisations, among others, were present on the occasion.

It is praiseworthy that all leaders of the organisations felt satisfaction to take the initiative to hold the polls after a long period of time and put forward their opinions about the election in the programme in a democratic, courteous and parliamentary manner.

The DU administration noted down all their opinions to review them, he said.

Leaders of different organisations did not make any provocative and illogical speech at the meeting; rather they stressed holding the polls at a suitable time, the VC said.

After discussing and reviewing their opinions, the DU administration will carry out the activities of the polls, he said.

Replying to a question of a journalist, he said the leaders gave different suggestions to hold the election mentioning different times such as before the national election, in November 2018 or in March 2019 .

However, the leaders gave opinions to hold the election considering all facts so that the DU can hold the polls, he said.
