EC calls for major parties to reach consensus

Election Commissioner Md Anisur Rahman has called for major political parties to reach a consensus for ensuring a fair and peaceful election in the country.
"We can't forecast the political situation in the days to come but we hope there will be a favourable environment…," he said.
Mr Rahman made the comment while responding to a query from the media at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital's Agargaon area on Wednesday.
He said a favourable situation would be there if voter presence and their security are ensured during the polls. Otherwise, the scenario would be different.
"Right now, we can't predict anything about the political situation in the coming days," he stated.
"Not the EC alone, the entire nation is eagerly waiting to see a consensus among big political parties. The people don't want to live in an atmosphere of constant apprehension."
"We strongly believe that there will be a political consensus which will be good for the people and the country," said the commissioner.
He, however, said the EC was moving ahead with the assignment entrusted to hold the elections, adding that the EC was well-equipped in this regard.
If there was a political consensus among major political parties, he said, the EC would be able to hold the polls freely and peacefully without chaos.
Mr Rahman said, "The EC wants all parties to make a move to reach a political consensus. We don't want to go back, rather prefer to move forward."
Like the EC, he said, political parties have the responsibility to create a good environment for elections.
