EC fails to create equal scope in polls: BNP

April 14, 2015 00:00:00

BNP accused on Monday Election Commission (EC) of failing to play due role and alleged that it had done little to ensure a level-playing field for all the candidates in the three city polls billed for April 28, reports UNB.

"We're observing with concern that the Election Commission is yet to create an equal scope for the opposition-backed candidates. As they're facing politically-motivated cases, they're unable to join electioneering. Their supporters are also being obstructed and harassed by law enforcers," said BNP international affairs secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon.

Addressing a press briefing at BNP's Nayapaltan central office, he also said though the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) has assured of taking measures to ensure a level-playing field, there is reflection of his promise on the field.

"We hope the government and the EC will help create a congenial atmosphere for holding the local government polls in a credible manner, ultimately contributing to creating a ground for resolving the political crisis and conflict on the basis of a consensus in the future," Ripon added.
