EC finalises 30 symbols for Upazila polls

The Election Commission (EC) has finalised 30 election symbols for the upcoming upazila parishad (UZ) elections by issuing a notification in this regard, reports UNB.

Out of the total symbols, 10 were allocated to candidates for the chairman post, 10 to the candidates for the vice-chairman post and the remaining 10 symbols for the candidates of woman vice-chairman post.

The ten symbols earmarked for the chairman candidates are pineapple, cup-saucer, shrimp, motorcycle, horse, telephone, inkpot-pen, battery, helicopter and cap.

Another ten symbols earmarked for the candidate of vice-chairman post are spectacles, type-writer, lock, tube-well, loud-speaker, aeroplane, parrot, ship, book and bulb.

The allocated ten symbols for the women vice- chairman candidates are butter-fly, duck, football, camera, pitcher, lotus, pot for flower plant, electric fan, arrow-bow and sewing machine.

According to the local government ordinance, candidates are allowed to choose and mention one symbol each when they submit the nomination papers for the election.

In case of allocating the symbols, the returning officer will prefer the choice of the candidates.

If more than one candidate choose a particular symbol, the returning officer will take the decision through lottery, the EC official said.
