EC moves to register left-out Khaleda as voter

September 17, 2008 00:00:00

The Election Commission (EC) is making a special arrangement for registering ex-premier and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia as voter, along with other VIP and general persons left out during the last nationwide voter-listing drive, reports UNB.
Khaleda Zia had refused to register as voter from jail custody at that time, as her party, BNP, also had stayed away from the electoral process.
The EC will also consider the matters of people who remain out of the voter list for logical reasons or who want to change now their voter-registration areas for contesting the upcoming Upazila elections.
"The Commission will have to use special powers to register people who were left out from the voter list," EC secretary M Humayun Kabir told a press briefing at his office Tuesday, replying to a question.
He said necessary notices were sent to the district-level election offices to see if anybody was excluded from the voter list. "This matter will be finalised within next week," he said.
The EC secretary informed that the commission would launch a pilot project tentatively in November to assess what methodology would be used for updating the voter list every year.
"It's an experiment, which will be conducted in the country's rural area," he said in reply to a question.
