The Election Commission (EC) has sought the provision of giving fine and sentencing a maximum three-year jail term for obstructing media workers from gathering news during the time of elections, reports BSS.
In continuation of this, the EC has proposed to add this provision to the Representation of the People Order (RPO), a national electoral law, Election Commissioner Md Ahsan Habib Khan told the journalists at his office at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the city on Sunday.
"You (media-workers) are our eyes and ears. Instead of us, you have to collect the news correctly from the polling stations. Considering your safety, we have made a new addition to the law," he said.
Earlier, the EC finalised several amendment-proposals of the RPO and sent them to the Ministry of Law on August last. The ministry will present those before the cabinet division and it will send the amendment-proposals of the RPO to the Parliament after scrutinising.
There is a plan to install CCTV cameras in all the polling stations during the elections, the Election Commissioner said, adding:"But if there is any deficiency in the budget, then it will be installed only in risky polling centers."
