ECNEC okays nine projects involving Tk 28.10b

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) Tuesday approved nine development projects involving Tk 28.10 billion, including Chittagong city outer ring road (Patenga to Sagorika) at Tk 8.56 billion, reports UNB. With ECNEC chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, the approval was given at ECNEC meeting. Of the total project cost, Tk 17.73 billion will come from the government exchequer while Tk 10.37 billion as project assistance," said Planning Minister AK Khandker while briefing reporters after the meeting. Planning Secretary Monzur Hossain was present at the meeting. Khandker said the Chittagong city outer ring road will be constructed to protect the area from tidal surge as well as to ease traffic movement. The meeting also approved Barind rain water preservation and irrigation project (2nd phase) at a cost of Tk 2.39 billion which will facilitate irrigation through preserving rain water. The ECNEC meeting gave nod to another project titled formulation of voter list with picture and providing assistance to give national identity card, 3rd phase revised (Tk 5.58 billion). Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the meeting that the next national election will be held on electronic voting system and asked the Election Commission to take necessary steps in this regard. Once the system is introduced there will be no need to use ballot papers reducing the cost for holding polls. The other projects approved in the meeting are upazila complex extension (Tk 7.75 billion); construction of hostels (37 units) for blind children (Tk 420 million); procurement of vehicles and machineries for waste management and setting up of asphalt plant (Tk 320 million); construction of physical infrastructure facilities at the evicted shores under Dhaka, Narayanganj and Tongi river ports (Tk 990 million); completion of works on Gouripur-Kachua-Hajiganj-Ramganj-Lakshmipur road (Tk 270 million) and construction of multipurpose cyclone shelters in the coastal belt (Tk 1.82 billion).
