Former Election Commissioner Sohul Hossain said on Saturday the goodwill and sincerity of the Election Commission (EC) is enough to arrange polls in a free and fair manner, reports UNB.

"If the Commission wants, the polls must be held in a fair manner because the Constitution bestowed unlimited power upon it to make elections fair," he said addressing the closing ceremony of a training workshop for journalists in the city.

Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) arranged the training workshop at its office for journalists covering elections.

Emphasising media's role in holding fair elections, the former Election Commissioner said the media alongside the Election Commission will have to play a neutral and responsible role in this connection.

DRU president Shakhawat Hossain Badsha said no action had been taken against those involved in assaulting journalists during the last city corporation elections.

He urged the EC to be more sincere for ensuring the security of journalists and facilitating access to information with a view to making election credible.

DRU general secretary Ilias Hossain and Convener of the Reporters Forum for Election and Democracy Sheikh Nazrul Islam also spoke on the occasion.
