Edn system destroyed after present govt assumes power

Says Mirza Fakhrul

FE REPORT | April 01, 2024 00:00:00

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Sunday that the country's education system has been destroyed after the present Awami League government assumed power.

He made the comment while addressing an iftar party jointly organised by the Gonoforum and the Peoples Party at a city hotel.

"General students have been on the movement at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). But the Chhatra League has entered the campus by force. Bangladesh is passing a tough time. Common people are in great trouble due to the soaring prices of essential commodities," Mr Fakhrul said.

"People find hardly any practice of good governance in the country," he added.

"Democracy and independence of the country will be imperiled if we fail to restore those. So, we must be untied irrespective of party affiliation for establishing our rights," he continued.

He said that the government has become more aggressive and cruel after the election on January 7, 2024.

He added that the people of the country are now being oppressed and tortured by the ruling party so that none could dare to raise any protest against the government.

He said, "Rule of law and good governance have been sent to exile perpetually."

"A deadly anarchic situation has gripped the country thoroughly. The country is running as per the will of a single person. A sense of fearfulness and panic is being spread out among the public minds from town to rural areas just to establish a one-party BAKSAL rule in the country," he said.

Another instance of the ruling party's oppression on the opponents has been seen in denying bail to detained party leader Habib-Un-Nabi Khan Sohel and later sending him to jail, he added.

"I express deep concern over continued detention of opposition leaders by denying bail to them with the help of the state machinery," he said.

Mr Fakhrul demanded immediate unconditional release of Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel and withdraw of all false cases filed against him.

"The ruling Awami League has become more desperate and cruel after assuming power through dummy election held on January 7, 2024," he said.

He blamed the ruling AL for continuous oppression and torture on opposition parties including BNP leaders and activists just to remain in power.

"They (government) detained opposition leaders and activists indiscriminately. The AL has turned the country into their zamindari (feudal estate) by arresting the opposition party men, including BNP leaders and activists, and filing false cases against them," he maintained.

Meanwhile, senior joint secretary general of BNP Ruhul Kabir Rizvi visited the residence of the party chairperson's detained adviser Habibur Rahman Habib, also convener of BNP's Pabna district unit, in the capital's Shyamoli area.

Mr Rizvi inquired about the wellbeing of the members of Habib's family.

He demanded immediate release of all detained party leaders and activists including Habibur Rahman Habib before the upcoming Eid-up-Fitr.

BNP chairperson's special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas and party's health affairs secretary Rafiqul Islam were present, among others.
