Awami League (AL) acting general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam Wednesday had a meeting with its city unit leaders and discussed as to how to infuse dynamism into its organisational activities, reports UNB.
The AL acting general secretary asked the city unit leaders of the party to remain vigilant so that every city dweller could be enlisted in the voter list and inspire the city ward leaders so they can take similar initiatives.
The AL has decided in principle to dissolve the existing Dhaka city unit committees of the party and bring in new faces to gear up their activities and the meeting was part of that.
Party's presidium members, joint secretaries and organising secretaries will meet the leaders of the Dhaka City unit of the AL at its Dhanmondi office on November 10.
Senior AL leaders feel that the party's city unit needs to be rejuvenated as its president Mohammad Hanif died in November, 2006 and general secretary Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya is absconding as the Anti-corruption Commission has filed a case against him.
Former acting president of AL's city unit Omar Ali and organising secretary Sayeed Khokon deserted the party to join Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) of Ferdous Ahmed Koreshi.
Present acting president Rahamatullah is also absconding, while vice-president Kamal Majumder is in jail.
Vice-presidents Habibur Rahman Mollah and HBM Iqbal, and Joint Secretary Haji Selim are also absconding.
The AL city unit could not take up a single programme for the last couple of years due to internal conflict between Hanif and Maya.
In 2005, the AL had given eight presidium members the responsibility of coordinating all activities of the party in eight parliamentary constituencies of the capital separately but they could not do that as they failed to resolve the dispute between the two groups.
Now the AL is trying to declare a convening committee for the Dhaka City unit and a party candidate to contest the next mayoral election to the Dhaka City Corporation.
These issues are likely to come up in the November 10 meeting, sources said.
Dhaka city unit acting general secretary Quamrul Islam submitted a report on its organisational activities at the meeting.
Most city leaders want appointments to the city unit's vacant posts to give a momentum to the organisational activities but they are not in favour of dissolving the existing Dhaka City unit committee.
AL leaders Khairuzzaman Liton, Dr Dipu Moni and BM Mozammel Haq and City AL leaders Faizuddin Mia, Shah Alam Murad, Abdul Quddus, Sheikh Bazlur Rahman, Mukul Chowdhury and Abdul Haq Sabuj were also present at the meeting.
