'Elected govt should enact Right to Information Law'

September 29, 2007 00:00:00

Former chief adviser Justice Muhammad Habibur Rahman has said the proposed Right to Information Law should be finalised by an elected government, not by a caretaker one, reports UNB.
He was addressing the inaugural session of a three-day celebration, marking the Right to Information Day 2007, at the LGED auditorium in the city Friday morning.
"All you know about what the past political governments did over various issues, including separation of the Judiciary. So I'm not saying that the next government will do something new. But the fact is that the job should be done by the one who is supposed to...I should not think that I can do everything," he said. Mass Line Media Centre (MMC), in collaboration with Manusher Jonno, Democracy Watch, Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication, D Net, ARTICLE, CTFB and Biswa Sahitya Kendra, organised the three-day programme.
Justice Habibur Rahman said enactment of the Right to Information Law is the demand of time, but all will have to be careful so that the citizens' rights are not harmed by the law anyway.
