Ensure undistorted results: grand alliance

December 28, 2008 00:00:00

As the Election Commission (EC) set the stage for voting in the crucial national elections, both the power-aspirant alliances Saturday placed their final checklist with different demands to the EC before going to Monday's polls-one complaining that the administration is pitted against them and the other seeking undistorted results, reports UNB.
A five-member delegation of the BNP-led four-party alliance led by BNP joint secretary general Nazrul Islam Khan had a meeting with the Commission at the EC secretariat when they alleged that some administrative officials have been working in favour of their rival alliance.
The meeting over, Khan told journalists that the officials are working in favour of their rival Awami League-led alliance ahead of the election. "It's a violation of code of conduct and barrier to holding free, fair and credible polls," he said.
Terming their (officials) efforts as the trial to deny them power through the upcoming elections, the BNP leader said they are working with the powers vested upon them.
Later a seven-member grand-alliance delegation led by Awami League leader HT Imam had a parley with the commission at the EC secretariat and demanded publishing the election results without distortion of facts, as they also harbor a sort of doubts from their standpoint.
HT Imam told journalists that the previous administration and the Election Commission were not neutral and committed the deeds intentionally to create the influence.
He said the election commission should be aware of the secretaries who he said discharged duties in favor of a vested quarter and gradually received their promotion. "We've requested the EC to be aware of those secretaries," he said.
Imam said still there are many partisan and nonpartisan officials in the administration but they have become 'our associates in discharging duties'.
"We don't want to create divisions among them (officials)," he said.
The AL leader made it clear that the results of the election have to be published without making any kind of mistake like the previous elections.
He said the returning officers have to publish the results after collecting the results from all presiding officers and send these to the election commission so that 'distortion of the facts is not committed in the midway'.
Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda and Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain were present at the parleys with the two alliances on the penultimate day when all the hosting were to close after midnight to count down the all-important time.
Returning officers are the main persons of making announcement of the results, he said adding that they told the EC to remain alert so that the results, while passing through various hands, are not distorted by any means.
The government is sincere in making a level playing field for all parties, Toufiq Imam said adding: "from the information we have gathered so far it is seen that there are still some government officials with complaints of partisan attitudes."
Replying to a question if there is any fear about the officials about whom there are complaints of partisan activities he said there was fear in some cases and the EC have been informed about those.
