SYLHET, Feb.6: The European Union's Election Observation Mission (EOM) has emphasised the importance of conducting secure and safe elections in Bangladesh on 12 February, highlighting the need for a congenial atmosphere and maintenance of law and order.

Addressing a view-exchange meeting with journalists at the Sylhet Press Club on Friday, the EU Chief Observer Ivars Ijabs said the mission has called for a fully participatory election, emphasising the inclusion of women, minorities, and representatives from all segments of society.

Ijabs said the EU mission has been invited to offer an impartial and independent assessment of key aspects and stages of the election. The observers will carry out their tasks impartially and will not interfere in the process.

He said, "The main priority is the security situation, stressing the need for safe and peaceful elections in Bangladesh. He also highlighted the importance of participation from everyone, including women and minority groups."

Replying to a question on fairness, he said the mission is also monitoring whether all candidates have a level playing field in the elections across all 300 constituencies in the country.

A press conference will be held on 14 February to release a preliminary statement on the elections, he added.

After the electoral process concludes, the mission will submit a comprehensive final report to all stakeholders.
