August 09, 2007 00:00:00

The European Union said Wednesday they are ready to help Bangladesh in whatever way they can to overcome the current flood and its aftermath, reports UNB.
The assurance was made by a EU delegation, led by Ambassador of the Netherlands Kees Beemsterboer who is currently holding the chair of the European Union in Bangladesh, during a lengthy meeting with Foreign Advisor Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury at the Foreign Ministry.
The French chargé d' affaires Jean Romnicianu and the EC Delegation's First Counsellor Francoise Collet were on the delegation.
"The EU are friends of Bangladesh. We're willing to discuss how we can be of help to improve the situation. We want to play our part in doing some reconstruction and we can help in other ways too," Ambassador Kees Beemsterboer said.
Apart from the flood, they also discussed human rights issue in the country as Ambassador Beemsterboer said although the human rights situation is improving there are still some issues outstanding.
He, however, would not precisely speak about any particular outstanding issue, saying that they discussed the follow-up of what the EU troika delegation had earlier discussed with the government.
