Ex-AL lawmaker Pavel held

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested former Awami League (AL) lawmaker from the Nilphamari-3 constituency, Saddam Hossain Pavel, in the capital's Mohammadpur area.
Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) of the DMP Muhammad Talebur Rahman said that Pavel was nabbed around 11pm on Thursday.
He also said that Pavel was accused in multiple cases linked to the July (2024) Uprising.
Mr Talebur added that separate DB teams also detained eight other leaders and activists of the AL and its associate bodies from different parts of the capital.
The arrestees were involved in planning and financing sudden processions in the capital, said the police officer.
Meanwhile, a police team of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have arrested three members of a fraudster gang for allegedly taking over Tk10 million from people with a false promise to provide them with jobs.
Special Super (SS) of the CID Media Wing Jashim Uddin disclosed the development to the media.
He said that the three fraudsters were arrested from Dhanmondi in the capital and from different villages in Thakurgaon and Dinajpur districts during separate raids conducted by the CID's the cyber investigations and operations unit on Thursday. They were identified as Akash (22), Rashed (28) and Asad (30).
One mobile phone set and several SIM cards were also seized from their possession.
Mr Jashim Uddin said that the arrestees had swindled people out of a large sum of money (assumedly over Tk 10 million) promising to give them part-time jobs and hefty profits against investment.
The arrestees had lured the people into investing money through online and telegram app giving them false promise of getting multiple times profits against the insignificant amount of investments.
The CID official further said that the arrestees had confessed to their involvement in committing the crimes.
He said members of local and foreign fraudster circles might have link with them (arrestees). Investigation into the cases filed against them was underway. Others involved in such crimes will be brought to book, he added.
