Ex-HED engr, wife sued over Tk 61.73m embezzlement

FE REPORT | October 20, 2021 00:00:00

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday lodged a case against three individuals including a former supervising engineer of Health Engineering Department (HED) for their alleged involvement in accumulating Tk 61.73 million from unknown sources.

The accused were: former supervising engineer (retired) of HED Dhaka office Md Nazrul Islam, his wife Syeda Tamanna Shaherin and brother-in-law Syed Hasan Shibly.

ACC deputy director Ashish Kumar Kundu filed the case as per section 27(1) of ACC Act-2004, section 4(2) of Money Laundering Prevention Act-2012 and section 5(2) of Prevention of Corruption Act-1947.

During investigation, the commission revealed information on Tk 83.81 million worth of movable and immovable assets in the name of Mr Islam and Tk 1.73 million worth of wealth in the name of his wife.

Scrutinising the documents of these assets, the investigators found Tk 23.81 million worth of wealth as legal while the rest Tk 61,731,763 came from illegal sources.

The ACC found two residential plots, bought in the name of Mrs Shaherin at Gulshan and Nikunja in the capital at a cost of Tk 1.73 million.

As Mrs Shaherin is a housewife and she doesn't have any legal source of income, the investigators suspect that those plots were bought with illegal money accumulated by her husband.

Besides, she transferred about Tk 60 million to a dozen accounts, held by her husband, in the form of donations.
