Ex-Jamaat MP Taher, among 13, sued for extortion

COMILLA, June 18 (UNB): A case was filed with Chouddagram police station against former Jamaat lawmaker Syed Abdullah M Taher and 12 others Sunday night on charge of extortion and looting fish and fishing nets.
The police sources said fisherman Shohag Morshed Chowdhury of Dimatoli village of the upazila filed the case at about 11:45 pm.
In his complaint Shohag alleged that associates of Taher at his behest demanded a toll of Tk 0.50 million from him on December 15, 2003 as he was rearing fish taking lease of Jagannath Dighi of the area.
As per their demand Shohag, also the general secretary of Chouddagram Matsya Chashi Samity, said he gave Tk 0.30 million to the extortionists on June 10, 2004.
Shohag also alleged that cohorts of Taher looted fish from the pond and fishing nets several times. Meanwhile, police arrested one of the accused Aminul Islam from the area.
Police some days back arrested Taher in another case.
