A Dhaka court has sent former food minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder to jail in a case lodged over the murder of Daffodil International University student Ramij Uddin Rup in the capital's Karwan Bazar area during the recent anti-discrimination student movement, report agencies.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mehedi Hasan passed the order on Thursday as police produced Sadhan before the court after the end of his seven-day remand in the case and pleaded to keep him behind the bars till the end of probe.
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuddin Hossain on October 4 placed the former minister on seven-day remand in the case.
A team of detective branch of police arrested Sadhan from the capital's Bashundhara Residential Area on October 3.
According to the case documents, Rup (21) was gunned down in Karwan Bazar area on August 4 as he was taking part in anti-discrimination student movement. Rup's father AKM Rakibul Ahammed filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station against 223 including the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court has sent former Member of Parliament from Sunamganj-5 Mohibur Rahman Manik to jail in a case over the attack on a student during the mass uprising.
Judicial Magistrate Alamgir Hossain passed the order after Manik was produced before the court on morning, said officer-in-charge (OC) of Sunamganj Sadar Police Station Nazmul Haque.
Defense lawyer Abdul Hamid said the former MP was not present at the scene during the attack on students, yet he was named as an accused.
He also mentioned that Manik is currently very ill, and they have applied for medical treatment and prison privileges.
Besides, his bail hearing is scheduled for October 15.
Earlier, on October 8 night, Manik was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from the Bashundhara residential area in Dhaka.
The arrest was made in connection with a case filed by Hafiz Ali, the brother of a student injured during student student-led movement.
Besides, a Dhaka court has sent ex-principal secretary to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Nazibur Rahman and former home secretary Md Aminul Islam Khan to jail in a case lodged over the murder of Jubo Dal leader Shamim, reports BSS.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed the order on Thursday as police produced Nazibur, also the former chairman of National Board of Revenue (NBR), and Aminul before the court after end of their three-day remand in the case.
The court of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubul Haque on October 7 placed Nazibur Rahman and Md Aminul Islam Khan on three-day remand each.
Detective branch (DB) of police arrested Nazibur Rahman from capital's Ramna area, and Aminul from the capital's Banani area on October 6.
According to the case documents, BNP called a grand rally on October 28, 2023. To foil this programme, Awami League too called its own grand rally in the capital. At one stage, Awami League goons, with the help of police, attacked BNP's rally in Naya Paltan, killing Shamim on the spot.
