A Dhaka court on Tuesday acquitted former Barisal-2 Jatiya Party lawmaker Golam Faruk Ovi from the charges of a case lodged over the murder of actress and model Syed Tania Mahbub Tinni in 2002, reports BSS.
Ovi, sole accused in the case, was acquitted in a judgment pronounced by Dhaka 2nd Additional District and Sessions Judge Mst Shahinur Akter.
The former lawmaker was tried in absentia and was defended by state-appointed counsel Shah Ilias Ratan at the court and the lawyer expressed satisfaction over the judgment.
Tinni was murdered on November 10, 2002, and her body was found under Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge-1 the next day. Her family said she got into a relationship with Ovi and divorced her husband only four days before her death to marry the Jatiya Party leader.
Tinni's family alleged that she was murdered by Ovi as she started to force him to marry her and even threatened to expose him before the media.
Dhaka 7th Additional District and Sessions Judge Court on July 14, 2010, framed charges against the sole accused Ovi.
