CHATTOGRAM, Nov 27: The High Court (HC) has granted bail to former Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akter in a case filed over the murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu in 2016.
The HC bench of Justice Md Ataur Rahman and Justice Ali Reza passed the order on Wednesday.
Advocate Golam Mowla Murad, lawyer of accused Babul Akter, told The Financial Express that the HC granted bail to Babul Akter today (Wednesday).
He said, " Babul Akter will be released after the bail order reaches Chattogram."
It may be mentioned that on June 5, 2016, Babul Akter's wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu was shot and hacked to death by miscreants in the GEC Intersection area of Chattogram city. At that time, she went to the intersection to drop her elder son to the school bus. Babul was in Dhaka at the time of the incident. Later, he came to Chattogram and filed a murder case against unnamed miscreants.
After Panchlaish thana, the city detective police investigated the case. They failed to submit a charge sheet after nearly three years of investigation. Later, in January 2020, the PBI was ordered to investigate the case on the orders of the court. On June 24, 2016, Babul Akter was brought to the DB Police office in Dhaka and interrogated for about 15 hours.
On May 11, 2021, Babul Akhtar was taken into custody and interrogated by the investigating agency PBI. Referring to the involvement of Babul Akhtar in the investigation, PBI submitted the 575-page final investigation report (FIR) of the case to the court on May 12, 2021 for filing a case against him.
After filing the FIR of Babul's case, he was made the main accused in the charge sheet of the case filed by his father-in-law. PBI claimed that Mahmuda Khanam Mitu was killed with the planning and financing of Babul Akter.
