KHULNA, Sept 30 (bdnews24.com): An expelled Awami League leader has been killed in an 'encounter' with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Dumuria Upazila in Khulna.
The 'gunfight' took place in the early hours of today (Thursday).
The police identified the deceased as Kazi Fazlur Rahman Mohabbat (40). Mohabbat was recently expelled from the ruling Awami League.
The police said a RAB squad was on duty at a check-post on the Bastuhara Bypass Road when Mohabbat along with his two friends was passing through the check-post ignoring the RAB's signal to stop.
Instead Mohabbat and his group fired at the RAB personnel when they were challenged, according to RAB and police.
RAB also opened fire in self defence, leaving Mohabbat critically injured. He was declared dead after being taken to the Khulna Medical College Hospital, RAB-6 officer Commander Mohammad Shoeb told the news agency.
A 9mm pistol, an LG, six rounds of ammunition and a motorcycle were recovered from the spot.
RAB claimed that Haridas Majumder, sub-inspector of RAB, was injured in the gunfight.
Mohabbat was accused in several cases including killing of a freedom fighter, extortion and woman oppression, Sub-inspector of Khalishpur police station Shafikul Islam said.
