Extortion case against ex-state minister Alamgir Kabir, 36 JMB suspects filed

NAOGAON, July 29 (UNB): An extortion case was filed against former BNP state minister and LDP leader Alamgir Kabir and 36 suspected activists of the banned Islamist outfit Jama'atul Mujaheedin Bangladesh (JMB) here Sunday.
M Ramzan Ali of Bisha village in Atrai Upazila filed the case with the Criminal Court No 3 against the former state minister and 36 JMB activists, including Abul Hossain Master, Abdus Sattar, Hemayet Hossain Himu and Nazrul Islam.
Judge Syed Farook Ahmed, taking the case as 'ejahar', ordered the officer-in-charge (OC) of Atrai police station to conduct further investigation.
In his case statement, Ramzan Ali alleged that the militants set up a camp in Atrai Upazila and unleashed "a reign of terror in the area at the instruction of the former state minister".
They also used to abduct innocent people and realise toll from them.
On May 27, 2004, the militants ransacked the houses of the plaintiff and other witnesses to extort toll. They also beat up Ramzan's wife and looted valuables worth about Tk 50,000 from his house.
The JMB cadres picked up Abdul Jalil and Abdus Sattar, witnesses in the case, and their families had to buy their freedom for Tk 40,000 after eight to nine days in captivity.
