A Dhaka court rejected on Sunday the bail petitions of BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and its three other party leaders in four separate cases, reports UNB.
Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge (in-charge) Ruhul Amin passed the orders after their lawyers submitted separate bail petitions to the court.
The three other BNP leaders are Mirza Abbas, a standing committee member, Abdus Salam, the party's Dhaka City member secretary and BNP
Standing Committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.
Advocate Sanaullah Mia stood for the petitioners while Mohammad Abdullah Abu for the state.
On March 16, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan sent
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Mirza Abbas and Abdus Salam to jail rejecting their bail petitions in three cases, including that of a murder, in connection with an arson attack on a bus during the then opposition's blockade programme before the national election.
On January 3, miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a Gulistan-bound bus
from Abdullahpur during BNP-sponsored blockade programme, leaving its
passengers Shahina and Farid and driver Babul Hawlader injured with burns. Shahina and Farid later succumbed to their injuries.
Later, three cases were filed with Shahbagh and Ramna thanas in this connection.
On February 9, the High Court (HC) granted bail for eight weeks to the BNP leaders. However, responding to a government petition, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court overruled the HC order that had granted them interim bail.
Besides, the court also denied the bail petition of BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain in a case filed for siphoning off money abroad.
Director of the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) Nasim Anwar filed the case with Ramna thana in the capital on February 6.
According to the case statement, Mosharraf Hossain laundered 0.804
million British pounds (equivalent to Tk 95.4 million) to the United Kingdom when he was Health and Family Welfare Minister during the 2001-2006 tenure of the BNP government.
On March 12, a team of Gulshan thana arrested Khandaker Moshrraf Hossain from his Gulshan residence and handed him over to Ramna police.
