FENI, May 28 (UNB): A court here on Wednesday granted an eight-day remand for local BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar, also the prime accused in the case filed for the gruesome murder of Ekramul Haque, Awami League-backed chairman of Fulgazi upazila parishad.
The court also placed Fulgazi Awami League leader Abdur Rahman Rouf, arrested in the murder case, on a five-day remand.
Judge Khairul Amin of Cognisance Court-1 of Feni's Chief Judicial Magistrate Court passed the order after police produced the accused before the court seeking a 10-day remand for each of them.
Earlier, on Tuesday, plainclothes police arrested Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar, convenor of Feni district unit of pro-BNP Jatiyatabadi Tanti Dal, from the capital Dhaka.
Mahtab contested the recently-held polls to Fulgazi Upazila Parishad against Ekram, but lost to the AL leader.
Earlier in the day, police and Rab in their separate drives in Fulgazi upazila arrested Abdur Rahman, general secretary of Fulgazi Kazir Bagh union unit AL, in the upazila. The law enforcers also recovered two foreign pistols and nine bullets during the drives.
Meanwhile, police arrested Feni Jubo League leader Ziaul Haque Bappi from Serunia in Daganbhuiyan upazila in the murder case on Wednesday.
A total of 21 people have so far been arrested for their alleged involvement in the sensational murder.
On May 20, Ekram, also president of Fulgazi upazila unit of Awami League, came under attack by miscreants in front of Bilasi Cinema Hall area in the morning on his way to Fulgazi municipality office from his Masterpara residence in the district town.
The miscreants intercepted Ekram's microbus, shot him from close-range and burned him alive. They also stabbed and beat up others accompanied with him.

in connection with the murder of Fulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haque Ekram.
Being tipped off, a joint team of police and Detective Branch of police raided a re-fuelling station beside Feni-Noakhali road around 12:45pm and arrested Bappi, organising secretary of Feni municipality ward 5 unit of Jubo League.
Police said they raided the area acting on information gathered by Rapid Action Battalion from Abidul Islam Abid who was already in custody.
With Bappi's arrest, the number of arrestees in the Ekramul murder case now stands at 21.
