Former adviser of caretaker government Akbar Ali Khan termed the first year of ruling government's performance 'disappointing' in terms of corruption mitigation.
"Despite their pre-election announcement to annually publish wealth statements of all top government officials, ministers, MP's and their relatives, the government is now showing reluctance," he complained.
"Government approach towards anti-corruption drive has disappointed us as we expected positive steps," he said while speaking at a launching ceremony of a book titled - The Unheard Truth: Poverty and Human Rights- by Irene Khan.
The event was attended by finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith as chief guest while BRAC chairman and founder Fazle Hasan Abed was present as special guest. Executive chairman of Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC) Dr Hossain Zillur Rahrnan, chairman of Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Professor Rehman Sobhan were also present on the occasion.
Presided over by BRAC Development Institute (BDI) director Professor Syed Hashemi the book launching ceremony was organised at the city's BRAC Inn auditorium.
Praising the contents of the book, Akbar Ali Khan slammed the present government's mechanism saying that they have all their good initiatives on paper only, with almost nil implementation.
Finance minister in his address congratulated the author for bringing out this important book He stated that all humans are born equal with rights and the government is working to ensure their rights.
In the book, author Irene Khan argues ardently to secure and uphold respect for human rights. She sees poverty as the denial of human rights and an affront to human dignity. She also states that poverty should be viewed through the lens of human rights violation.
