Five recent city polls neither competitive nor participatory: Shujan

The recently-held five city corporation elections have neither been competitive nor participatory; rather they were merely a game of voting, a non-partisan citizens' platform observed on Wednesday.
Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan), or Citizens for Good Governance, said the overall present political situation in the country is not conducive for holding a fair and free national election, which might push the country into an uncertain future.
Shaujan's Secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar, executive committee member Shahdeen Malik, Chittagong district unit president Prof Muhammad Sikandar Khan, Sylhet unit president Farooq Mahmud Chowdhury and Rajshahi unit president Ahmed Safi Uddin were present at the conference, among others.
On behalf of the organisation, Shujan's central coordinator Dilip Kumar Sarker presented the analysis and observations on the recent elections.
Speaking on the occasion, Badiul Alam Majumdar raised a question on the election mechanism.
Demanding proper investigation and exemplary punishment for the people responsible, it said not only major political parties but also people boycotted the by-polls which attracted only 11.5pc voter.
