A total of five mayoral candidates for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) polls withdrew their nomination papers on the last of withdrawal yesterday (Thursday).
Retired film actress and former member of parliament (MP) of Awami ” went to Dhaka north returning office at Agargaon on the day and withdrew their nomination papers, according to the Election Commission (EC).
On the other hand, the finance secretary of BNP Abdus Salam and other candidates- Abul Bashar and Reaz Uddin contesting for DSCC have also withdrawn their nomination papers.
Advocate Md Selim withdrew the nomination papers on behalf of Abdus Salam, Nowabul Islam, a staff of Dhaka South returning office told journalists.
Earlier, the Election Commission (EC) announced the election schedule of two Dhaka city corporations and Chittagong city corporation elections on March 18, 2015.
As per the schedule, the polls will be held on April 28 simultaneously at the three city corporations.
The last date for collecting nomination papers was March 29 and the papers were scrutinised on April 1 and 2 last. And April 9 (Thursday) was the last date for withdrawing nomination papers/ candidacy for the polls.
"I withdrew my nomination paper following the request of the Prime Minister and for the sake of country and the party's interest," Kabori told journalists after withdrawing her nomination paper.
Kabori Sarwar and Boby Hajaj Bin Musa had filed their nomination papers for contesting mayoral election of DNCC.
Hajaj told journalists at his Banai office in the capital that he would not contest the race and went to the Dhaka North returning office and withdrew nomination paper.
Meanwhile, independent candidate for mayoral election of DNCC Anisuzzaaman sought BNP's support at a press briefing at the National Press Club on the day.
He complained against Annisul Huq for violating electoral code of conducts. He also blamed the EC for not playing impartial role.
"The EC should take stern action rather than only serving show cause," he said.
He claimed that the returning official concerned has asked him not to paste his election posters whereas the party candidates set billboards.
"If there is no equal opportunity (level playing field) for all (contesting candidates) then there will be irregularities in the upcoming city corporation polls," he said.
Before him the joint- secretary general of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh Mahi B Chowdhury sought BNP support for DNCC mayoral election.
Election Commissioner Shah Newaz suggested city corporation elections under party banner as major political parties are involved in the ongoing election campaign.
"The major parties are now involved and supporting the candidates in the elections. So, considering it I think this elections (city corporations) should be held under party banner," he said.
He said that if the government wants to enact such law then they (government) must inform us (EC).
"The electoral code of conducts should be followed by all the candidates. If they fail to follow the rules the EC will take stern action," he told journalists at the EC office at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital on the day.
