BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir speaking at a book launching ceremony at the party chairperson's Gulshan office in the city on Sunday — Focus Bangla

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said that they did not go to the foreigners rather they (foreigners) came to them (BNP) to know about the situation in the country.

He came up with the assertion while unwrapping the cover of a book Khaleda Zia and Tarique Zia at the BNP chairperson's political office in the capital's Gulshan area.

He made the remarks to defend his party from the allegations made by the ruling Awami League that BNP used to go to foreigners to tell them about the internal matters of the country.

Regarding Awami League general secretary and road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader's comments made on Saturday saying that the government is set to prepare visa policy, Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, "What should I say about it? You (government) prepare visa policy, let us see. The nation is in trouble. There must be a way out of it."

Fakhrul also said, "People started coming to the streets. They don't have voting rights. The existing political problems will be solved on the streets through movements."

He also claimed, "Awami League never held fair elections. None believe that fair elections would be possible under their (Awami League's) rule."

He further said that BNP doesn't have the history to demean anyone.

The BNP leader said Awami League doesn't remember Tajuddin Ahmed and Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bahsani.

Fakhrul also criticised a caption in the book he unveiled which says that 'Khaleda Zia in 2014 elections'. He said that BNP didn't participate in the 2014 elections. "The photo of Begum Zia was from a public meeting, not an election meeting," he added.

He, however, expressed satisfaction with the cover of the book.

Advisers to BNP chairperson Tajmeri Islam, Farhad Halim Donar and the party's education affairs secretary Obaidul Islam were present, among others, on the occasion.

Meanwhile, at a different programme on Sunday, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi claimed that police detained a total of 800 BNP activists in over 200 cases from May 19 until today.

He made the remarks at a press briefing at BNP's central office in the capital's Naya Paltan area.

He alleged the ruling Awami League for creating violence, killing and political turmoil sensing that people have rejected them (Awami League).

The chaotic situation prevailing in the country was created by the ruling Awami League.

Rizvi also claimed that the life of women folk in the country becomes risky now due to the repressive rule of the Awami League.

He said that the ruling Awami League is now involved in witch-hunting activities.
