Candidates of the three city corporation elections, slated for April 28, started their election campaigns on Monday midnight, three days before allocation of election symbols, reports UNB.
"Official election campaign started on Tuesday. I urge the candidates to abide by the election code of conduct during their campaigns," Election Commissioner Shah Newaz told reporters at his office on Tuesday.
He said the returning officers are authorised to take necessary actions against the candidates for the violation of the election code of conduct, and magistrates will assist them in the work.
"Already actions have been taken against some candidates for violating the election code of conduct. So far, everything is going on peacefully," he added.
Unusually, candidates kick off their election campaigns with their election symbols, but those will be allocated on April 10.
EC secretary Sirazul Islam on March 30 said electioneering can be carried out for three days without election symbols.
In previous city corporation and other elections, candidates were suggested to start campaigning only after the allocation of symbols.
The candidates of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) elections will get 20 days to conduct electioneering as the curtain will fall on campaign on April 26 midnight, 32 hours before the balloting.
Meanwhile, Election Commissioner Shah Nawaz on Monday said the Election Commission has decided to exchange views with candidates and other stakeholders of the three city corporation elections from April 11.
He said the programme to that end in Chittagong City Corporation will be held on April 11, while for Dhaka North and South City Corporations they are likely to be held on April 12 and 13 respectively.
