Police have submitted charge sheets for eight more cases filed across Bangladesh in connection with murders and other offences committed during last year's anti-government protests, raising the total number to 34, reports bdnews24.com.
On the cases, 13 are murder cases and 21 involve other criminal charges, the Police Headquarters said in a statement on Tuesday.
A total of 1,730 cases were filed across the country for murder and other offences related to the July Uprising, it added.
Police had previously said 26 charge sheets had been submitted by August 21.
The charge sheets in the murder cases were filed in the Sherpur, Feni, Chandpur, Cumilla, Dhaka, and Kurigram districts, as well as by the Police Bureau of Investigation and Chattogram and Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.
Additionally, police in Bogura, Chapainawabganj, Sirajganj, Pabna, Naogoan, Mymensingh, and Jamalpur districts, alongside Dhaka, Barishal, and Rajshahi cities, have submitted charge sheets for the 21 other cases.
The statement also mentioned that the 13 murder cases have a total of 1,390 suspects, and the other cases implicate 777 suspects.
The movement, which began in July 2024 with a demand for government job quota reform, eventually led to the Sheikh Hasina government's fall in August last year.
The interim government issued a gazette stating that over 800 people were killed in the July Uprising.
However, a related UN investigation report estimates that more than 1,400 people may have been killed between Jul 1 and Aug 15 of last year.
