Former defence forces intelligence (FI) chief Rezzaqul Haider and former NSI chief Abdur Rahim were Monday placed on four-day police remand in the August 21 grenade attack case of 2004 which has been undergoing fresh investigation with the change of government, reports UNB.
Metropolitan magistrate court granted remand when the current investigation officer Abdul Kahhar Akhand prayed for their 7-day remand. Granting the remand the court directed the investigator to take utmost precaution in interrogating them. The court also ordered the authorities to give them division in jail and proper medical treatment.
Opposing the remand, defence counsel Sanaullah Miah submitted that they had been implicated in the case as they joined the BNP after retirement. Their names came at the behest of the ruling party when the trial of the case advanced with 61 prosecution witnesses had deposed before the court.
He further submitted that principal accused Mufti Hannan gave confessional statement under Section 164 CrPc twice which is illegal and he did not mention their names. His clients are peace loving citizens and they are not connected with the incident. Mufti Hannan mentioned their names under duress.
