French Ambassador Charley Causeret Monday said generally they would prefer the lifting of the state of emergency but the coming general election in Bangladesh could as well be held in a situation that had prevailed during the local-body polls on August 4, reports UNB.

"I don't see any problem with the emergency if political parties are allowed to campaign freely, hold rallies and bring out processions and people could cast their vote freely to choose their candidates," he told journalists at his residence.

The European diplomat's observations came at a time when political parties here are persistently demanding of the caretaker government to immediately lift the emergency rule to prepare for the general election.

Causeret, who observed the municipality election in Fulbaria Upazila in Mymensingh, said although he was not a professional observer, but he saw peaceful and smooth casting of votes, a large turnout and a lot of women voters casting their vote.
