Three suspected drug peddlers suffered bullet wounds in a reported gunfight with police in Komornai area of Gaibandha town in the early hours of Saturday, report agencies.

The injured were identified as Sabuj Miah, Maruf Hasan Jim and Moshiur Rahman.

The drug peddlers were held during an anti-drug drive recently.

Following a tip-off, a team of police along with the 'drug traders' conducted a drive in the area, said Khan Mohammad Shahriar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gaibandha thana.

When the team reached the spot, a 'gang of drug traders' attacked the police with sharp weapons. In retaliation, the law enforcers fired back, triggering the gunfight.

At one stage, the three 'drug traders' were caught in the line of fire and injured with bullets.

Three among the five injured police personnel have returned to work after receiving first aid, while two others are still undergoing treatment in a hospital, the OC said.

"Jim is a top drug dealer in the district, according to the list prepared by the police. He is accused in a number of narcotics cases. His accomplices Shabuj and Mashiur are also known drug dealers. Another case has been filed against them under the Narcotics Act," the OC added.

Meanwhile, police arrested 31 alleged drug traders and recovered various types of narcotic items from the city's Khilgaon areas on Saturday.

Motijheel Division under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) conducted special anti-narcotics drives in Khilgaon, especially Taltola and Nandi para areas, from 10:00 am and it continued until 2:30 pm.

During the drive, the police arrested 23 drug traders, who were wanted in six cases and seven are listed drug traders of Khilgaon thana, while the other one named as Sohel is wanted by Teknaf thana in a drug related case, said Deputy Commissioner (Motihjeel Division) Anwar Hossain.

The police also detained seven more people suspecting them as drug takers and traders during the drive. If found innocent, they will be released after scrutiny, the DC (Motohjee) added.

The law enforcers also recovered 600 yaba pills, two kgs of Hemp and 10 bottles of phensidyle during the drives.
