The High Court (HC) granted interim bail on Wednesday for six months to BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy in a case filed in connection with the killing of an Islami Chhatra Shibir activist on December 29, 2013, reports UNB.

An HC bench comprising Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz and Justice Md Ruhul Quddus passed the order following a bail petition.

With the HC order, there is no legal bar to the release of the top BNP leader, said his lawyers.

On April 20, a Dhaka court sent two BNP leaders-Gayeshwar and Amanullah Aman-to jail after rejecting their bail petitions in the case.

The court, however, had granted bail to BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas in the same case.

Metropolitan Magistrate Harun-ur-Rashid passed the orders when the three BNP leaders surrendered before the court on completion of their HC bail.

A Shibir activist was killed in a clash between police and 18-party activists during their 'March for Democracy' programme in the city's Malibagh area on December 29 last year.

A case was filed with Rampura thana in this connection on December 30 accusing the three BNP leaders and some unknown people.
