Claiming that people spontaneously observed their hartal, BNP joint-secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged Monday that the government agents torched vehicles and carried out various subversive acts over their daylong shutdown programme, reports UNB.
"The government has once again indulged in its old dirty game as it did before the January-5 election. The government with its agents is torching public vehicles to shift the blame onto the opposition," he said.
Mr Rizvi came up with the allegations while talking to reporters about their shutdown programme at BNP's Nayapaltan central office.
He alleged that the government obstructed their peaceful programme and arrested their leaders and activists.
The BNP leader also claimed that police opened fire on a procession of their party's voluntary unit Swechchasebak Dal in the city's Pallabi area, leaving their activist wounded with rubber bullets.
He said the government has resorted to repressive acts to suppress the opposition's movement and reestablish a one-party rule.
Mr Rizvi said the party men took to the streets across the country braving the government's repressive acts, as people extended their spontaneous support to their hartal.
He alleged that police prevented the BNP leaders and activists from entering the party's Nayapaltan central office.
Police kept the BNP central office cordoned off since morning and arrested two activists from the main gate as they tried to enter it.
Meanwhile, an anti-hartal procession brought out by Bangladesh Chhatra League paraded the Nayapaltan area in the morning.
Mr Rizvi also alleged Sunday night that the government agents hurled petrol bombs at public vehicles and carried out other subversive acts ahead of the 20-party's daylong hartal of Monday.
Addressing a press briefing at BNP's Nayapaltan central office, he claimed that the government carried out the violence to shift the blame on the opposition.
The BNP leader strongly condemned the bomb attacks on public vehicles and other violent incidents in the city on the eve of the shutdown.
Rizvi urged people to remain alert about such government plots.
He also alleged that the law enforcers are raiding BNP leaders and activists' houses and harassing their family members over the hartal programme.
Six people suffered burn injures as unidentified miscreants hurled crude and petrol bombs at different public vehicles in the city Sunday evening.
A bus also caught fire after a bomb attack in the city's Purana Platan area.
