BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Wednesday alleged that the government is trying to impose state of emergency to prolong its stay in power, reports UNB.
"They (govt) are conspiring to create an anarchic situation in the country to declare emergency in a bid to hang on to power," he said.
The BNP leader made the remarks while addressing a discussion organised by Praktan Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Foundation at the Jatiya Press Club.
They arranged the programme in protest against the 'death threat' to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and the 'mass killing' by the government.
Mosharraf Hossain alleged that the government wants to declare state of emergency to bury all their failures and remain in power using muscle power.
"But we want to categorically say the people of the country won't accept the conspiracy of Sheikh Hasina to hang on to power, as they're united on democracy."
In a separate programme, opposition chief whip Zainul Abedin Farroque, said the government has to bear the responsibility of the mass killing as they instigated the law enforcers to kill innocent people across the country.
Another report adds: The top BNP leaders on Wednesday submitted their bail petitions in advance with the High Court (HC) in five cases filed by Ramna, Paltan and Shahjahanpur thanas in connection with violence in the city on Saturday (March 2), reports UNB.
The bail petitions were submitted to a division bench headed by Justice Kamrul Islam Siddiqui and Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain.
On behalf of the BNP leaders, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah, Barrister Zamir Uddin Sircar, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Barrister Ahsanur Rahman filed the bail prayers.
The hearing on the petitions will be held today (Thursday), said Barrister Ahsanur Rahman.
Police filed the cases against 38 BNP leaders and activists, including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed, with three thanas on charges of torching and damaging vehicles, and attacking cops during the violence in the city's Kakrail, Shantinagar and Shahjahanpur areas Saturday afternoon.
Of the five cases, two each were filed with Ramna and Paltan thanas while the other with Shahjahanpur thana.
