General Secretary of Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SUJAN) Dr Badiul Alam Majumder speaking at a discussion on \'Holding DCC and District Council Polls\' at VIP Lounge of the National Press Club in the city Thursday. Former adviser to the caretaker government

Speakers at a roundtable discussion in the city observed Thursday that the government is intentionally dillydallying to hold the election to the two city corporations of Dhaka 'fearing its defeat' in the polls, reports UNB.

Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan) organised the roundtable at the Jatiya Press Club.

Speaking on the occasion, Sujan secretary Badiul Alam Majumder alleged that the government is procrastinating to announce the polls to Dhaka North City Corporation (DCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation fearing its defeat as it has a bitter experience of losing all of the five city corporation elections in the past.

Criticising the government for bifurcating Dhaka City Corporation into two, he also said now the two city corporations are run by unelected representatives, which is an utter violation of the Constitution and a court order.

Speaking on the occasion, Sujan president M Hafizuddin Khan, who presided over the function, noted that no political party believes in the freedom and importance of local government.

Prof Asif Nazrul of Dhaka University said the government is delaying the DCC polls as it knows very well that it will lose the polls. "The government has got a message that the country's people are not with it."

The speakers also demanded immediate announcement of the polls schedules of the two Dhaka city corporations and zilla parishad.

They also demanded enacting the Zilla Parishad Act immediately.
