CHATTOGRAM, Sep 05: The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) has called on Chief Adviser (CA) Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus to hold national elections without delay, warning that public patience is running out as the government focuses on reforms instead of restoring democracy.
Economist and central leader of the party Dr MM Akash issued the warning while speaking at the inaugural session of the 13th conference of CPB Chattogram district on Friday,
He said Dr Yunus took office following the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government amid a mass uprising, supported students and political parties.
However, instead of preparing for polls, he alleged that the interim government has focused long reform, international deals and indirect political strategies.
He said, "The expectation of the people was clear. They wanted an election. But Yunus's activities have cast doubt over whether elections will actually take place, raising questions about whose agenda he is really serving."
Pointed to Dr Yunus's recent trip to London, where he met BNP Acting Chair Tarique Rahman and mentioned February as a possible election timeframe, Akash said, "This indicated that the chief adviser had no intention of calling polls voluntarily. He did so only under pressure."
Urging Dr Yunus to step aside if he cannot deliver, the CPB leader said, "Your reforms and judicial measures have failed to restore public confidence. It would be better for you and the country to hold elections quickly and hand over power to an elected government," he said.
During the event, Akash also criticised Awami League's previous politics of compromise, claiming they enabled anti-liberation forces to regain power. He reaffirmed that CPB would continue defending the spirit of the Liberation War and resisting external powers attempting to control Bangladesh's ports and resources.
The conference, chaired by CPB Chattogram president Ashok Saha and conducted by assistant general secretary Nuruchhafa Bhuiyan, was followed by a red-flag procession through the city. The second session later resumed at a local community centre.
