Govt gags opponents' voice to establish one-party rule

FE REPORT
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan said on Saturday that the government was not allowing the opponents to express their views with an aim to establish one-party rule in the country.
"Government doesn't give opportunity to the opponents to express their opinions. Some will follow Awami League, while other support BNP or other parties ...and these are the practice of the world. Our country has been liberated for the cause of democracy. But the government started imposing one-party rule in the country that the whole world is observing and that is the situation how we could live,? he said.
He came up with the remarks while visiting family members of the member secretary of Dhaka South Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal Rabiul Islam Nayan at his residence in the capital's Moghbazar area.
About allegation made by a section of government ministers that BNP depends on foreign powers to get back power, he said, "If BNP leans or depends on foreign power they would watch cinema in air conditioned room throughout the year, but BNP has been on the movement against the government to restore democracy in the country."

              Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan
"The allegation made by the government that BNP moves door to door of the foreigners for getting back power is not true," he continued.
"BNP is regularly holding meetings, rallies and march programmes throughout the year. So there is no basis of government allegation," he said while refuting the allegation made by the government that BNP is seeking foreign powers' help to come back to power.
"We (BNP) hope that the government would believe in democracy. They (government) would give people scope to express their views and give back people's democratic rights. The government must prove that what they say must match with their action," he said.
"You have watched all the three elections held under the present government. The 120 million voters of the country rejected this election (held on January 7, 2024). But the government remains in power with force. The government must give back people's right to vote. We want to live in a free environment and want freedom of speech," he continued.
Akkas Sheikh, father of Rabiul Islam Nayan, said that his son could not stay at their home for the last 15 years.
Mother in law of Nayan Shirina Parveen and his wife Shammi Akter were also present.
