'Govt misleads people about rising prices'

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Saturday said the government was confusing the people regarding the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities.
It accused Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of resorting to falsehood to confound consumers on the soaring prices of kitchen items.
Senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi brought the allegations against the government during a regular press briefing at the party's central office in the capital's Nayapaltan area.
"The syndicate government has started talking absurd on commodity prices. This government has signally failed to contain the prices of essentials…," he said.
He said the PM at a press briefing at Gonobhaban on Friday blamed those involved in the anti-government movement for escalating essential commodity prices.
"This type of language of the PM has proved that her totalitarianism has gone rotten… She has nothing left other than telling lies and falsehood," he continued.
"She herself admitted that the prices of essential commodities have been increased," maintained Mr Rizvi.
He said it was the old and ingrained practice of the ruling Awami League to shift their own liability or failure on the BNP men's shoulders.
"It becomes so tough for commoners to sustain due to escalating prices of essential commodities. The dummy government is publicly vocal to arrest spiralling prices."
"But in practice, they (government) have utterly failed to do that," Mr Rizvi went on, saying: "The government is now being controlled by those who are controlling market."
"Not only lower-income people, but also those in the middle-income bracket have become helpless due to the increased prices of almost all essential commodities," he mentioned.
Mr Rizvi said limited-income people have been facing difficulties in purchasing rice, lentil, onion, chicken, garlic and other essential items.
