Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader said on Thursday the government is not interfering in elections to the Dhaka south and north city corporations, report agencies.

The AL leader came up with the remarks while speaking at a press conference on contemporary issues at Secretariat in the city.

Responding to BNP's allegation of influencing the EC's work, Quader said, "The Election Commission (EC) is not working at the order of the government. It is working independently."

He said the government is not interfering in the election process. "It will never happen," he added.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said the people should abide by the order passed by the High Court regarding rescheduling of the Dhaka city polls. "Elections to the two city corporations will be held on January 30 (as per the court's order)," he said, requesting demonstrators to call off their protests.

Replying to a question about Bangladesh Chhatra League's involvement in the protest, the AL general secretary said: "There are members of the Hindu community in the Chhatra League who might have taken part in the movement from their religious point of view."

Quader said, "I urge the demonstrators to refrain from movement accepting the verdict of the High Court. Now everyone is passing busy time for holding of the city polls in a festive environment."

About some lawmakers' demand for 'crossfire' for the rapists in the Jatiya Sangsad, Quader said they expressed their personal views in the parliament.
