The government is now 'regulating' democracy, claims BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, report agencies.
"The government controls the administration and judiciary. In its latest move they made a broadcast policy to control the media. The sole objective is to establish a regulated democracy," he told a discussion on Saturday.
He warned that the government cannot be in power for long by adopting 'illegal' means.
Referring to police cordoning off the BNP Naya Paltan headquarters on Friday, Mirza Fakhrul said: "Around 1,500 police personnel were deployed around the Naya Paltan office. They did it as they knew a major political party will celebrate its chairperson's birthday at its office.
"They are scared of an indoor event. This proves that the Awami League has no ground. They have been isolated from the people."
He also said, "The government has framed the policy ignoring public opinions to reestablish one-party Baksal rule as it lost grounds beneath its feet."
National Democratic Party (NDP) arranged the programme on the National Broadcast Policy at the Jatiya Press Club, marking the 6th death anniversary of ex-information minister Anwar Zahid.
According to the senior BNP leader, their current movement is not about assuming office, but intends to bring back democracy and ensure people's right to vote.
"The Awami League has snatched everything. They are in power by force."
