Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu said on Friday BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is launching harmful programmes including hartal under the banner of 18-party alliance to protect war criminals, reports BSS. "Begum Zia has taken bold stance to save war criminals. That is why she is calling hartal frequently to obstruct the trial process of war criminals," he told a farmers conference at Engineers Institutions of Bangladesh (EIB) in the city. Krishiponyer Jatiya Jono-Mulya Commission, a platform for fair prices of agri-products, organized the conference. Chairman of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) Kazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmed, political leaders, representatives of different government and non-governmenal organisations, among others, addressed the conference with the commission president Shirin Akhtar in the chair. To ensure fair prices, many developing countries have price commissions for agriculture products. The government should immediately constitute a price commission for agriculture products, Inu said. The present government will consider the matter with due importance as it always gives special attention to the development of the farmers, he added. "Farmers are important segment of the people of Bangladesh as they are driving force of economy," he said, adding country's real progress lies in the development of farmers. Nearly 75 per cent people are directly involved with agriculture, Kholiquzzaman Ahmed said adding the agri-sector should be given high importance to turn Bangladesh into a middle-income country. He stressed the need for building a system for preserving agriculture products to ensure fair prices. Other speakers said farmers are not getting fair prices of their produces as the country has no price commission. They urged the government to form a price commission for ensuring fair prices of agriculture products.
