Govt should mull over BNP's 31-pt proposal for reforms: Gayeshwar

FE REPORT | October 26, 2024 00:00:00

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy on Friday said the interim government should consider their 31-point proposal for state reforms.

He made the comments at a meeting hosted by Munshiganj District Women and Children Forum at the party's central office at Nayapaltan in the capital.

It does not require months after months for carrying out state reforms initiated by the interim government, according to Mr Gayeshwar.

Pointing to the government, he said, "The reforms that are out of the purview of politics are 'imaginative reforms' and massive reforms don't match with the reality. So, political problems should be resolved by politicians."

"As we did movement simultaneously, we have put forward our 31-point reform proposal to the nation after modifying and discussing with all the political parties (except Awami League)."

"You (the government) may consider the proposal," cited the BNP leader.

He said BNP's acting chairperson Tarique Rahman has presented a 27-point state programme to the nation, adding that at least 40 political parties agreed and put forward BNP's 31-point reform proposal.

"If needed to change or modify our proposal, you (the government) may discuss with political parties," stated Mr Gayeshwar.

"As we (politicians) all have agreed to hold a free and fair election, the government should review our reform proposals."

Mr Gayeshwar questioned the legality of comments made by Awami League leader Jahangir Kabir Nanak in a Facebook Live, which was published or covered in the media.

Awami League men are still in comfort zone. None of them are yet to be nabbed..., according to him.

Earlier, Mr Nanak in his verified Facebook page claimed Awami League president Sheikh Hasina was still the legitimate prime minister of Bangladesh, saying that Dr Muhammad Yunus, Dr Asif Nazrul and others formed the government that was illegal and unconstitutional.

In his speech, Mr Gayeshwar stressed the need for a separate and strong forum for protecting and preserving women and children rights.

He termed the forum that organised the event an apolitical but an independent organisation of women and children.

"The Sheikh Hasina government siphoned off Tk 18 trillion abroad by giving budgets worth trillions year after year. This money should be brought back to the country," said the BNP heavyweight.

BNP standing committee member Begum Selima Rahman, joint secretary Abdus Salam Azad, Swechchhasebak secretary Mir Sorafat Ali Sopu, and Women and Child Rights Forum member secretary Nipun Roy Chowdhury, among others, were present.

In an another development, BNP vice-chairman Dr Osman Faruk paid homage to the grave of the party's founder and former president Ziaur Rahman in Sher-e- Bangla Nagar area on Friday.
