Govt terribly vindictive towards rivals: Khaleda

January 24, 2018 00:00:00

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia said on Tuesday the government's vindictive attitude towards its opponents is gradually becoming very dangerous, reports UNB.

She also said the government wants to eliminate the existence of the opposition and alternative opinions.

In a statement, she said, "The current regime has created a suffocating situation in the country where no one, including political leaders and activists, feels safe and secure."

The BNP chief issued the statement protesting the arrest of her advisory council member Advocate Taimur Alam Khandaker and Swechchhasebak Dal organising secretary Yasin Ali.

"I strongly condemn and protest their arrest," she said.

Khaleda said the government is using 'false' cases and arrest as its weapons to harass and suppress BNP leaders and activists.

"Spreading panic among people has now become essential for the government to protect its power by suppressing people's protest against it. A senior lawyer and political leader like Taimur Alam Khandaker has been arrested only for this reason," she observed.

The BNP chairperson alleged the government has also taken a destructive policy to grasp the entire nation and establish its dictatorship.

She also said the opposition leaders and activists in the country are being deprived of exercising their constitutional rights. "There's no sign of democracy now in the country while the government has snatched people's basic and human rights."

Khaleda urged the government to stop the 'mass arrest' of BNP leaders and activists across the country.
