Govt to amend Cooperative Act

December 14, 2007 00:00:00

The caretaker government has taken an initiative to amend the Cooperative Act to keep the cooperative societies free from political influence.
The LGRD and Cooperatives Adviser Mohammad Anwarul Iqbal said this while addressing the annual general meeting of Dhaka Reporters' Unity Multi-purpose Cooperative Samity Limited in the city Thursday, reports UNB.
The adviser expressed the view that the Cooperative movement could not make progress in the past due to political interference.
Undue interference had deprived people of getting the desired benefits, he said. The people have thus lost confidence on the cooperative leadership.
Iqbal said the government was making all out effort to restore confidence in the cooperative movement.
