Communications Adviser MA Matin Wednesday said the government would decide whether or not suspected corrupts on list would be allowed to take part in next city corporations elections, reports UNB.
"It depends on policy makers' decision," he told reporters at his Ministry.
Matin, also Chairman of the National Coordination Committee (NCC) on serious crimes, said the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) published names of 35 suspected corrupts on October 4 based on the merit of allegations against them.
Names of 50 corrupt suspects came in the first list, 51 in the second, 39 in the third, 35 in the fourth list (part-1) and two in a special list.
Providing statistics, Matin said so far 573 cases were filed against suspected corrupts till October 23. The ACC, National Board of Revenue and police filed 372 cases while 201 non-ACC cases.
Among the cases, 44 cases were disposed of by courts, 131 cases are now under trial and investigations in 285 cases are progressing.
Inquiry is on in 88 cases and preliminary inquiry is being done in 25 other cases, Matin said.
The Adviser said 60 to 62 task forces are working across the country and stressed the need for increasing the number of task forces and capability of workforce at ACC and NCC to speed up the pace of investigation and trial.
He could not confirm whether or not trial in rest of the cases would be completed before the caretaker government hands over power to an elected government.
The Adviser, however, hoped that the elected government would carry on the task of completing the cases if the caretaker government was unable to do so.
